Good morning Point Fitness!
I want to start off with a lesson in scaling. What does it mean to scale a workout?
What it means to scale a workout is to modify a movement or weight or distance in order to create the best scenario for you to progress.
Scaling isn’t about making a workout easier or “cheating yourself” from what is programmed for the day. To scale means that you know your body and your strengths and weaknesses enough to know that there are some things that you may not be ready for. By modifying the movement or weight, you are building up the strength and form needed to some day do the prescribed movement or weight.
It’s important to understand this. When myself or my trainers program workouts, we do it in order to challenge every person in the gym. This means that sometimes the workout is super heavy or technical because there are those amongst us who need that to push their level of fitness.
What should you do when you see a workout that you can’t accomplish as prescribed?
Probably best to just skip that day right? WRONG!
I want to use an athlete I’ve been coaching for over 8 years as an example of this. I hope he doesn’t mind. Brent Ramey has been with me since before I opened CrossFit The Point. Brent comes every day. He rarely has missed the past 8 years but Brent has some mobility issues we’ve been working around. His overhead mobility prevents him from certain movements, i.e. Overhead Squats or heavy overhead presses.
So what does Brent do when these are programmed? He modifies. Because he modifies, he has been able to continue improving despite some of these limitations. Not only that, his overhead mobility has improved greatly. I remember when he was unable to press more that 100 pounds overhead and now he is able to get the lockout with 185 pounds. It has taken time but because he listened to his body and his coaches, he has been able to improve and workout.
At the end of the day, our goal is to become healthier and fitter. The workouts we provide will do this for us but only if we listen to the coaches and listen to our bodies.
Last night was a ton of fun and it was great to have the crew we did last night. I hope that we see more of you at these types of events in the future.
I hope all of you received the exciting email about attaching your bank accounts to our Point Fitness accounts. This is something I hope that all of you can do for us.
Because this is such a big deal for us, we are offering a free shirt and free entry into the 2020 Intramural CrossFit The Point Open if you change over before this Saturday. If you have already purchased the registration and shirt in your pre-order but make this change, I’ll be sure to refund your money. If you have made the change to ACH, please go into your app and use the Free pre-order option to select your shirt size.
2020 Intramural Open
The 2020 intramural open is upon us. This is for everyone. Here’s a little information from the CrossFit Games website:
“The CrossFit Games Open is the largest fitness competition on Earth and an exciting showcase of the CrossFit community. Here, athletes like you, from all around the world, show up and push themselves further than they ever thought possible over a five-week period. Challenges, PRs, and the unknown await.”
We run an in house competition with teams. You will be placed on one of four teams and throughout the 5 weeks of competition you will earn points for your team by just participating and doing your best.
The open is for all with Rx and Scaled options. No matter what level you are at, you can participate and have fun with this open. The past 7 years we have done this and we have close to 100 of our members participate. It’s a fun celebration of fitness and an excuse to get together every Friday night to eat and sweat.
These workouts are programmed every Friday anyways so why not sign up? And this year you can do it all for free and get a free shirt just by changing your billing to ACH.
I am super excited for this open season and to watch and have fun with all of you. It’s like CrossFit Christmas each week as they announce the workouts we are going to take on. Join me and let’s make the 2020 CrossFit Open a memorable one.
