Good morning CFTP,
First and foremost, I want to thank all service members who have served and for those who continue to serve this country. It is such a small percentage of people who volunteer and each and everyone of those people deserve to be recognized and appreciated. So, THANK YOU VETERANS!
While on the subject of military I wanted to draw from an example from my service in the military. Throughout history there are terms used in the military like “Band of brothers” or “Sempre Fi” or “Battle Buddies” or “Never leave a man behind” and so on. Where does this loyalty and commitment come from? How do military members become so committed and so loyal to their fellow soldiers, airmen, Marines, or seaman? There are many reasons but one that I want to touch on today.
While in basic training we were tested and worked 16-20 hours a day. We were put through trials and challenges that if we had to take them on alone, would break us. We were put into platoons and squads and taught to take care of our own. When one person suffered, we all suffered. When one person was successful, we all were successful. I hated basic training but I learned a lot during it. When we got taken through the gas chamber and had to take off our masks it sucked! But when you looked around and saw that your squad, your platoon and everyone you have suffered with were going through what you were going through, it made it easier.
I believe this is why CrossFit works. Before I joined CrossFit I was a lone wolf in the gym. I went in and wandered around. I did some sets here and there and didn’t want to talk to anyone. I just wanted to get a workout in and get out. It was fine but it never pushed me and not only that, I would miss extended periods of time because I had no one I felt would miss me if I didn’t show up. But with CrossFit The Point it is different.
When you come into The Point you become a member of our squad and your presence is important. Not only your presence but also your participation. Sometimes the workouts that we do really suck and there are times when I go in and I have no desire to even do them but when I am surrounded by my squad and we all commit together that we are going to take on this challenge, it makes it easier to get started. Then once I am started, having you there by my side pushes me to finish. Having your squad there suffering beside you makes all the difference in the world. This is what makes CrossFit The Point special. It’s all of you!
So, next time you see a workout that looks terrible or you wake up and you feel less than 100 percent, remember that when you show up to The Point, you are not only going to better yourself but you are also going to help one of your squad members accomplish something hard. Your presence and participation truly do matter and when you aren’t there, you are missed.
