Good morning CFTP!
This is the week! The CrossFit Open 2018 begins Thursday night!!! Love this time of year and can’t wait. As a reminder, we will be doing the Open wods on Fridays all day as our regular programmed WOD. We will be doing a throwdown on Friday nights starting at 7 PM. On the fifth and final week we will be having a BBQ during the throwdown for all members to join. On the first and fifth weeks we will be having the amazing Steve Arnoldus on hand to give us some awesome photographic evidence of our Open experience. The other three weeks in the middle, I will be doing my best to get some half decent photos. 🙂
I’ve been contemplating the question, why do I do hard things? And in correlation to that, why do I ask you to do hard things?
I was listening to a podcast this past week and Chris Cooper summarized a quote from Greg Glassman that he heard at his Level 1 Certification back in 2007. He said “When you do CrossFit 3 things will happen. You’ll either get a new job or get a raise. You’ll either improve your relationship or get out of your relationship… Shits going to get better.” He couldn’t remember the third one… And I couldn’t find it on the interwebs.
Why is this? Why is it that things in our lives get better when we start CrossFit? I think it’s because of what it does to us mentally more so than physically.
I ask you to do hard things and I program workouts that, at times, seem ridiculously hard not only to make you fitter and to make you physically stronger but also to make you mentally stronger and mentally more capable. And the longer I have been doing CrossFit and the longer I have been coaching and programming the more I believe in this.
In the past 6 years and after seeing hundreds of members join the gym and commit themselves to the process, I have recognized not only a physical change in them but I have also seen their business get better. I have seen them improve and get promoted at their job. I have seen people’s happiness improve overall.
In life we are creatures of habit and we naturally will always choose the path of least resistance. If we aren’t forced to feel uncomfortable or forced to push ourselves past what we think is possible then we won’t. There have been many times when I walked into the gym and looked at the WOD and said to myself, “Nope, not today. I’ll just do something else because that just looks terrible.” When I have these thoughts, more often than not I am able to overcome that negativity and just do it. It is days that I conquer my self doubt and conquer my negative feelings towards the workout that I feel most satisfied. When I finally finish the hellish workout, my confidence builds.
When we conquer our self-doubt we are changing our brains. We are reprogramming our brains and teaching ourselves that we can do it. I’ve been watching a little bit of the olympics and it’s through the app so they repeat the same commercials over and over and over again. There is one commercial that I love. It talks about the two words can and can’t.
