Good Morning CFTP,

We have heard from all of our amazing trainers at The Point. They are what make CrossFit The Point special. It was really cool for me to hear their stories and I loved sharing them with you. We truly have a special team at CrossFit The Point. What I love about our training team is that we are all on the same page. We all care about the members and are proactively coaching during our classes. This doesn’t happen everywhere. I hear horror stories of trainers who just don’t care. They start the clock and then sit on their phones or sneak back to their offices while you are left to workout. We are lucky to have our trainers.
I debated on spotlighting myself and decided it will be good for you all to know a little about my background and what brought me to CrossFit. So… Here I go!

1. How long have you been at The Point?
From day 1 or really from before day 1.

2. What do you do for a living?
I own and operate CrossFit The Point. I also dabble in some Thai to English translation from time to time but haven’t had the time to do much of that recently.

3. Prior to finding CrossFit what did you do for physical exercise?
I was in the Army so I would go to the gym and do the same routine as many. It was fine for a while but all in all it was super boring.
I also played soccer in high school and college and coached for a year at UVU. So a lot of my exercise came on the soccer field.

4. If you had to pick your favorite accomplishment during your CrossFit journey so far, what would it be?
It would definitely have to be opening CrossFit The Point. In the past 5 years I have made the greatest friends and I have seen these friends do amazing things. I have been surrounded by trainers who have become like family.
It was scary to open my own gym. I had no idea what was going to happen. I wasn’t even looking 5 years ahead. All I knew is that I wanted to create something special and wanted to be a part of something that helped change lives.
5. What is one piece of advice you could give new CrossFitters that you wish you knew before you began?
Scale, scale, scale. Over the years and many many hours of coaching I have learned a very important lesson. It’s ok to scale. As a CrossFitter you have your good days and bad. You have knocks and bruises that throw you off your game. If you have an injury then there is no benefit pushing through the pain. Scale the movements so that you can live to fight another day.
I personally learned this the hard way and have learned it through my interactions with hundreds of athletes over the years.
Another important piece of advice is that your only competition is the past you. Don’t worry about the whiteboard. I love the whiteboard as a coach because I get to see the amazing work that you all put in and it’s also a good reference to see where we need to improve but I don’t care who takes first or who takes last and neither should you. I care more about seeing a PR next to your name or seeing someone do something they have never done before.
6. What is your favorite movement in CrossFit?
This is a hard one but I love the squat snatch. It’s so beautiful when done correctly and there is always room for improvement on it. I’ll never be done learning how to better teach it and how to better accomplish it as an athlete.
7. What is your favorite all time WOD you have done?
Another tough question… I remember one WOD that was a CrossFit The Point programmed WOD and at the end it had some super heavy overhead walking lunges. I joined one of our classes and I took last place in the class.
Why does this stick out to me? Because even thought I took last I was surrounded by support. I remember being so frustrated with the WOD but you all gathered around me and cheered me on to finish the workout. There is no way I would have finished without that support. It made me fall even more in love with our community at The Point.
8. What are your goals for the upcoming year?
My number 1 personal goal is to become CrossFit Level 3 certified. I also really want to get a couple of more certifications to become a better coach and manager at The Point.
I also have a whole board of personal fitness goals… But those definitely come second to becoming a better coach and helping you all accomplish your goals.
9. Before starting CrossFit what was your view of CrossFit? How has that changed since joining?
I really didn’t know much about it but when Paul Diamond, a member of our tactical element in Iraq brought it up I was a bit negative about it. Before CrossFit I was very anti group training. I liked to do my own thing and thought group trainings were for girls trying to lose weight.
Then one day we did Murph together as a team and I never looked back. The team atmosphere is what makes CrossFit amazing. The challenging workouts are awesome but what makes CrossFit unique is the friendly competitive atmosphere from the community day in and day out.
10. Give me a brief summary of your CrossFit journey thus far.
I really can’t give you a summary of my CrossFit journey without a summary of CrossFit The Point…
I’m not sure how brief this is going to be but I’ll do my best. I started doing CrossFit as an athlete in December of 2010 in Mosul Iraq with my team. We started out with a group of 4 and at it’s peak we had as many as 15 people working out with us.
Originally we had all planned on coming back to America and opening a box together. Life got in the way for my peeps but I was still determined to make it happen. Within 2 weeks of being home I headed off to California to Jason Kalipa’s gym to get my level 1 certification. I then started training with Doug Meacham who was in the process of opening CrossFit Cedar Ridge. After they opened I became their head trainer under Coach Meacham. I loved it there but my dream was to open my own gym so in January 2012 I made the decision to seriously look into opening my own gym.
I played soccer with Ryan Beatse who was currently doing CrossFit and I invited him in as a partner. I then talked with Brent Ramey about finding a spot and he offered up his warehouse space as the first location of CrossFit The Point. (We now run our 100 meter sprints to that building). Brent Ramey and Matt Visser have been amazing people and have really helped me over the years as a new business owner. The first space was 2,000 square feet and within a year we had outgrown it. Luckily the space we are currently in opened up and we made the move.
We have had lots of ups and a few downs through the years but all in all this has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I have made lifelong friends and have seen so much personal progress from you all.
My personal CrossFit journey has had it’s ups and downs as well. Even with the setbacks I have suffered with injuries I feel that I am fitter now than I have ever been. I love CrossFit and how it challenges me physically and mentally. Getting through a tough workout has prepared me for other trials in my life and has definitely made me a better person. I love CrossFit The Point. I have great partners in Dave and Aubrey and especially my life and business partner Emily.
Thank you all for being part of my extended family. I truly feel that way and I can’t wait to see what the future of CrossFit The Point will bring.
